In our "Three questions to" category, Jessica Wullschleger tells us what she likes about working at a PR agency, shares her top tips for communications students, and tells us how she's currently finding some relaxation.
Since graduating, you've been working in the communications industry, Jessi. What inspires you about this work?
This field is incredibly diverse. Every client has different needs and as a result, different communicative measures are implemented. So I can do website customizations in a wide variety of programs, write local resident newsletters, organize events, or implement media relations across a wide variety of resorts. Our clients and the environments in which they operate are as diverse as their needs. I get to know subjects in a depth that I never imagined would be possible. For example, I gained insight into the nuances of construction, or I can now interpret engineering plans. Five minutes later, my mind switches to the world of finance and the security technologies of bank cards. This diversity also always means taking on different roles. That is what makes the job so versatile and never boring. I enjoy dealing with these topics every morning.
What is your practical tip for other communications students?
The best practical tip is probably learning by doing. Studying helps you to think from different perspectives and to look at a topic from different angles - you should definitely apply this on the job. It is also important not to be discouraged if a theory exam goes wrong. In the end, commitment and passion for the topics that you will be confronted with later in your professional life are what count. And another important tip: Save your work from your studies carefully and in a way that you can find it. There comes a time when you think, "I've done that before. But where is it?".
Where do you find some relaxation from the challenges of everyday life?
Now, during the Corona pandemic, I find it in cooking. Timewise, it doesn't work out every day to create a great menu. But challenging myself in the kitchen is a great way to relax. I have also discovered that knitting is a great way to relax. It has a relaxing effect when you can work a ball of wool into a blanket or a pair of baby socks. Before the pandemic and hopefully after it, I like to do sports. Somehow the newly discovered cooking skills must be brought back into balance as well 😊.
